The killing of snakes is prohibited by law as they are not pests of sanitary importance. By Snake Repellent we refer to the protection and control of snakes from a site by using ecological repellents that are friendly to humans and the environment. Snakes occur mainly in the countryside and also in semi-rural environments from early March to late October, and hibernate during the other months.
Snakes are particularly useful and beneficial to the environment and to humans because they feed on harmful insects and rodents. However, most snakes cause fear and panic in humans, who try by all means to drive them away or eliminate them from their surroundings. If we are ever confronted with a snake there is no way it will chase or attack us. When a snake senses the presence of a human being it tries to flee in every direction. Snakes can only attack and bite us if they become trapped and feel a threat to their lives.
In Greece there are about twenty-three species of snakes and five of them belong to the Echidna family and are considered dangerous to humans.
Preventive measures to repel snakes
– Frequent cleaning of the site, both outside and around the perimeter, from high and dense vegetation.
– Removal of objects that are ideal for a snake to nest such as piles of wood, piles of rubble, large stones, etc.
– Limiting or eliminating various sources of food and water for snakes.
– Closing openings of the area you want to protect.
Countermeasures
Application of snake repellent is carried out with formulations approved by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food by installing liquid snake repellent in the form of spray bottles at intervals around the perimeter of the premises (potential entry points) or granular formulation on the outer perimeter.
Protection of the premises shall be achieved by the use of repellent preparations available in the form of granular material. It is spread on the ground, forming a line around the perimeter of the area to be protected, thus creating a protection zone. This is preceded by a process of rupturing scattered formulation in various parts of your space to repel snakes from inside and then the protection zone is formed. For the best possible results the application is recommended to be repeated at regular intervals (30 – 40 days).
